Kaziukas Market 2021 in Vilnius

Each year on the first days of March, Vilnius Old Town streets are flooded with the uproar of weekend of Kaziukas. It is abound with the attendance of folk artisans and craftsmen. The Kaziukas Market attracts artists not only from the most remote Lithuanian places but also from neighboring countries. The market not only boasts with items for sale, but also with events. Music, children’s concerts and competitions will take place throughout the entire festival on the stage in the Tymas quarter. The festival of St. Casimir the patron saint of Lithuanian was born in the 17th century to whom this market was dedicated to in the 19th century. It is one other most remarkable calendar festivals with deep traditions, each time presenting ingenious handworks, and having no rivals in the surrounding areas. The market attracts several hundred thousands of visitors.

Arrival at Vilnius airport. Transfer to selected hotel. Check-in. Depending on arrival time, you can to walk around the city.

Walking tour of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania for more than 600 years, encompasses the most significant sights of the town: Gediminas Castle (14th century) on the Gediminas Hill, built by the founder of Vilnius city Grand Duke Gediminas; Cathedral Square; Amber gallery,  St. Anne’s Church and Bernardine Church - Lithuanian gothic example; the Gates of  Dawn with a holy image of the Virgin Mary; Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit; the Town Hall Square; Vilnius University (founded in 1579)  Ensemble  with St.John‘s Church; President Palace. Coffee/ tea with cake at local restaurant The remaining part of the day you can  visit the  events of Kaziukas market.

2.1   Jewish heritage in Vilnius (2-2,5 hours, on foot)

Many famous Judaism scholars and rabbis lived and worked in Vilnius; that is why over the 700 years of their presence in Lithuania Jews created a rich and diverse culture. Vilnius was called the Jerusalem of the North. During the tour you will visit the Old Town, where Jews had settled in, find out about the most prominent personalities and to get know more about the tragic history of the XX century, Vilnius ghetto and Holocaust.

 2.2 Uzupis-  Republic inside Vilnius (2 hours, on foot)

Užupis is one of the oldest quarters of Vilnius, mentioned in historical sources in the early 16th century. Then it was a quarter inhabited by the poor population, which the residents of Vilnius tried to avoid for many years to come. However, with the passing of time artists started to settle there and turned Užupis into a real republic of artists with its own government, constitution, the anthem, traditions and festivals. The sculpture of the Angel of Užupis symbolizes freedom and protects the residents of this quarter.

Trip to Trakai ( ca. 4  hours, from Vilnius )  

Trip to Trakai, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, nestled in a picturesque region of lakes, forests and hills 25 km from Vilnius, includes a visit to Trakai Castle (Entrance) ( Closed on Mondays) , the spectacular complex of defensive fortifications of the 15th century erected on the island in the lake Galvė. Today it houses the Historical and Applied Art Museum with an ethnographical exposition of Karaites, the small ethnic minority living in Trakai till nowadays. Return to Vilnius

5.  Visiting of Art Center of Baltic Amber.

 In the Art Center of Baltic Amber you can see an amber road, which is presented in an original and artistic way: drops of amber rolling down the pine; enormous creatures which walked in amber trees forest; natural amber pieces caught by Lithuanian amber fishermen in the stormy Baltic Sea; variety of amber colors and shapes. Inclusions create special value: like through the ship porthole you view the world of flora and fauna that existed 50 million years ago and got conserved safely in amber. The most valuable exhibit is a lizard in the amber piece. There are only few such inclusions in the world.  6. Excursion  to the old crafts workshops of The Fine Crafts Association of Vilnius

 Craft workshop-exposition (“live museum”) is interesting even without the working craftsmen: tools and wares are exhibited so that you can see the work process. History of Vilnius city craftsmanship is presented in the workshop dating back to the times of Grand Duke Gediminas, who invited craftsmen from all over Europe. It is a great place to feel the history of old Vilnius and take part of it with you. Baltic, ethnographic and contemporary crafts are represented here as well.
